Private Kindergarten Spanish Immersion

Private Kindergarten Spanish Immersion Program

Location: Minneapolis

Our Kindergarten program is designed to teach students core competencies in reading and language, mathematics, arts, social studies, physical activity, and social/emotional development. This will build the foundation for the rest of their grade school years and beyond. Students will have the opportunity to work individually, in pairs, and in small groups as they grow and learn together. Children do not need to know Spanish to join Rayito de Sol’s Kindergarten program.

Kindergarten students learn best by active, hands-on exploration, testing, and discovery. Through their senses, they are ready to expand their world beyond their homes and classrooms to the larger neighborhood or community. These experiences help them grow socially and intellectually. The following areas show what kindergarten students will experience in their first year at school.

Reading and Language:

  • Exposing students to a variety of literature types and authors (picture books, chapter books, poems)
  • Practice reading and writing in Spanish
  • Conversing with each other in Spanish to learn every day conversation, share emotions and express feelings
  • Interpret written and spoken Spanish

Mathematics

  • Learn to compose and decompose numbers 1 through 10
  • Learn and apply math rules to solve basic addition and subtraction problems
  • Learn to count by 2s, 5s and 10s
  • Apply different techniques to comprehend, interpret, evaluate, and solve math problems
  • Understand the difference between two and three-dimensional shapes
  • Games and other counting activities will further develop mathematical skills

Physical Development

We know that children need physical activity to grow. We’ll move our bodies every day to continue building and improving coordination, control, manipulation and movement skills. We’ll also practice and learn actions to promote a healthy lifestyle.

Social/Emotional Development

With all activities and lesson plans, we’ll learn to regulate emotions, work collaboratively, resolve conflicts through dialogue and respect the rules in the classroom. We’ll also focus on how we use these skills at home and with others so we can continue to act with integrity and build important social and emotional skills with others.

Social Studies

By exposing children to another language and culture, we will naturally educate on different backgrounds and cultural traits. We’ll also teach respect towards others who are different from us.  This includes:

  • Place and geography
  • Chronology/time history in order
  • Multicultural skills: In what ways and why do cultures differ from one another? Mentions, with the help of an adult, customs and family traditions and their environment.
  • Ethnic and gender diversity

Arts

Fostering creativity by using imagination and fantasy in a variety of art projects. Art projects include music, visual arts, dance, and theater.

STEAM

STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) is an approach used in our lesson plans. This approach applies two aspects of STEAM together in the same activity to further explore learning and play while developing key problem solving skills.

Projects and Special Events

Each lesson plan concludes with a hands-on arts and crafts project. These projects are designed to reinforce and remind students of all they learned in that particular lesson plan.

Occasionally throughout the year, we will replace the arts and crafts project with a culturally-relevant special event. By participating in these activities, children come to appreciate similarities and differences between American and Hispanic cultures.
